Here at Matt’s Republic we like to make silly arguments and use profane language when Matt I debate back and forth. While we both hold strongly to our beliefs and respect each other’s views, we like to have fun with it. But for this writing I am going to change the tone. I feel like in order to look at this issue properly it is time to take a more serious approach.

It is time to set Matt straight. In the year 2000 the World Health Organization released a study that ranked 190 countries on the quality of their health care systems. The United States of America ranked 37th, behind countries such as Colombia, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Costa Rica, France, Great Britain, Canada, and the United Arab Emirates. You have got to be fucking kidding me!
Who honestly thinks that this is ok? Really? God damn-it! I don’t understand why conservatives continue to support this broken health care system. And whenever someone says anything about changing the health care system or even mentions universal health care all republicans act like I just shot their mother. Republicans always talk about how horrible a universal health care system would be and claim how horrible things are in Canada, France, and Great Britain. All of those countries ranked higher than we did! Fuck me!
It’s not the people being rushed to the emergency rooms from car accidents that don’t get service. It’s the people that don’t have the proper health insurance to pay for their kidney transplant, or the chemo therapy. And even if their insurance companies cover them, the deductibles may be so high that they can’t pay rent or the electricity bill. Great, if you’re dieing your insurance company might help you, but then they’ll squeeze every penny out of you until your homeless. Or the insurance company might call the procedure that could save your life “experimental” thus not covering the procedure and ending your life.
To say all government programs are broken is just being cynical. Social Security may be drying up and needs to be fixed, but still works for now and has done its job for the past 65 years or so. Welfare does exactly what it’s supposed to do, giver poor people a little bit of money that they need. Sure nothing is perfect, but it is obvious that these national health care systems work better than the bullshit we got now, the numbers and studies speak for themselves.

I have a new ground-breaking idea, are you ready for this world. The idea is: just because you don’t have a fucking nickel you can call your own doesn’t mean you can’t get proper health care. As Americans we like to think of ourselves as the good guys, but are we really good guys if we continue to let people die of treatable diseases just because they can’t pay the doc so he can drive his hummer to and from work. I would say no. In fact I would say that that’s called being a greedy fuck-head. God Bless
Lets face, almost all of Washington is paid of by insurance companies to keep laws in affect that allow them to under provide so they can make money and people who need care die. Its time for universal health care, yes people I said, a government backed health care system that provides for everyone! But wait, I can hear you asking it now, isn’t that communism Herring? Well what I heard was that if poor people get health care paid for by the government than soon you’ll be forced to live on a collective farm! Spare me the 1960’s anti-communism bullshit!
It’s this simple people, if you’re sick, you should get help. But most importantly world, lets defeat the terrorists, keep the fags away, and all hail Warlord Bush!

As of July 2007, not a single scientific body of national or international standing is known to reject the basic findings of human influence on recent climate change.

On September 11th, 2001, America experienced one of its darkest days. Our beloved country was violently and tragically attacked by Islamic fundamental terrorists. We all remember where we were that day and the heart break, shock, and horror we all felt. And for the first time since the Cuban Missile Crisis American citizens lived in fear of a violent attack with catastrophic consequences on American soil. All Americans trembled at the thought of losing their freedom and being forced to live in fear. As a country we looked to our government to keep up safe from losing our way of life that we love so much.
Today is Friday, January 11, 2008, and there has not been an attack on American soil since 9/11. We have gone to war in Afghanistan and Iraq and have successfully removed two anti-American totalitarian governments. One would assume that our government protected us from the terrorists and preserved our freedom. But what else has our government done to preserve our freedom and keep us safe from the terrorists?
On October 26th, 2001, the Patriot Act was signed by George W. Bush and passed into law. We were told by our government that this new law would help keep us safe. This would allow the government to protect our freedom with ease. We were told by our president that this law was absolutely essential in the effort to defeat the terrorists and save American lives. But how could one law save America? Why was it so important? What did it exactly do?
In short, the Patriot Act allows the government to contradict the Constitution in the name of liberty and freedom. The federal government is able to wire tap your phones and listen in on your phone calls. The FBI can check what books you checked out from the library and check your internet history all without you every knowing. They can read your emails and look at your financial records. Worst of all, the government can search your house and never tell you they were there. Do they need a search warrant? Not anymore! If someone with Homeland Security, the FBI, or a person simply high up in the government suspects you as a terrorist then the government can do any of the numerous things listed above.
All Americans should be shocked and appalled by what the government can do. And for those who are not, please read this, “The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.” What you just read was the Fourth Amendment in the United States of America’s Constitution. And the Patriot Act is in direct violation of that Amendment. Doesn’t the Constitution and the Bill of Rights spell out our rights and freedoms!? Why is the government allowed to trample OUR rights and freedoms? Why do WE allow this to happen? Wasn’t the Patriot Act made to protect our freedom?
The Patriot Act was created in 2001, it is now 2008, and what else has the government done to protect our freedom? Unfortunately, the government has done more. On October 17, 2006 the Military and Commissions Act was signed by George W. Bush and passed into law. After learning of the horrors of the Patriot Act I was afraid to see what the Military and Commissions Act would bring. It so happens to be that this is much worse.
This new law suspends Habeas Corpus. This means that the government can arrest any “unlawful combatant” and detain them for as long as the government sees fit. But in this new law the government can claim that an American citizen is an unlawful combatant and keep them in jail forever if they so please without ever telling the American citizen why they are in jail or how long they will be there. American citizens don’t even have the right to a trial if the government thinks they are a “terrorist.” The government needs no evidence to arrest someone as long as it is in the name of national security and for the protection of our liberty, freedom, and democracy!
The most shocking part of this new law is that the Geneva Convention is OPTIONAL!! This means that the government can beat and torture an American citizen, no a human being! So we can sit comfortably and have freedom! Where is the freedom in that?! If you think this is good and support our government actions then I ask you what if it happens to YOU?! What if the government thinks you are a terrorist?! They can be checking your emails, listening to your phone conversations. Then they can arrest you and torture you until you give the information that they want that you don’t have because you are INNOCENT!! You will want your rights and freedoms then. You would wish that the American population stopped our government. Will this happen to you or me, probably not, but the horrifying thing is that is possible and now, it is legal!
It pains me to say that the Military and Commissions Act is not the end. Today, Friday, January 11, 2008, the Homeland Security Department released its plan for a new “National Identity Card” in the Real I.D. Act. In order to get in to government buildings, like the post office and public schools one must show there National Identity Card. If you want to get on an airplane or public transportation then you would have to show your new card. The Homeland Security Department hopes this will go into affect 2011. Is that the freedom and liberty we as Americans believe in?
My fellow citizens, we must open our eyes to the true threat, our own government. They have taken away our freedoms in the night while we as a people were in the shackles of fear and apathy. They said they would protect us, yet they spy, detain, and torture our fellow American citizens. What has happened to our great country? Where did we go wrong as a people? Let us not forget that we are a nation that rebelled against the world’s greatest power to become our own country. We are a nation that overcame the Great Depression and were victorious in two world wars. We stopped the spread of Communism and gave freedom to millions. We are a great people that have proved ourselves time and time again. So how did it come to this? How did we allow this to happen?
Too long have we sat by and not asked questions. Too long we have allowed this administration to run unchallenged and unchecked. Too long have we given up our freedoms and liberty in the name if safety and protection. Please, stand up against the Real I.D. Act so it doesn’t become law. We cannot continue down this road to dictatorship. How many Americans have died to protect of freedom? We must fight as hard and as passionately to protect ourselves from our government as much as our soldiers have fought our enemies abroad. We must protect our freedoms, our way of life, and eliminate terrorism. This is our great fight and our generation’s great struggle. History and our children will not forgive us if we fail.
